Chestnut Ridge, NY
Raised ranch residence with a contemporary extension designed to create a new open-plan kitchen and dining area, along with additional bedrooms at the lower level to accommodate a growing family. The homeowners had previously worked with another architect but ultimately felt the design did not reflect their needs. After transitioning to a new design approach, the project was reimagined with a strong focus on the kitchen as the heart of the home, resulting in a solution that fully satisfied both clients.
Space is Sacred
Every client brings a unique background to a project—sometimes as a contractor, mason, window specialist, woodworker, or artisan. In this case, the client’s expertise in the steel industry informed several distinctive design elements. This collaboration made it possible to create a glass floor at the stair landing that supports a fireplace above, allowing natural light to reach the basement vestibule. The project also features a custom glass-and-steel–framed canopy at the basement entrance, reinforcing the architectural expression of structure and transparency.

The roof configuration blends seamlessly with the existing house while allowing for increased ceiling heights within the new extension. Distinctive details include Yankee gutters, chain leader drains terminating at decorative stone spill plates, and an ipe wood deck extending into the rear yard. Window configurations were carefully coordinated with kitchen cabinetry and circulation paths, ensuring both functional efficiency and visual balance throughout the interior.
